Biography

Joanna McHugh, PhD, graduated from University College Dublin in 2006 with an honours degree in psychology.  In 2010 she completed her PhD thesis in Trinity College Dublin under the supervision of Professor Fiona Newell.  Her doctoral research focused on how social and emotional signals are perceived from crowds of people, specifically from a multisensory perspective.  Joanna began working with the Social & Mental Health Strand of TRIL Centre in April 2010.  Within the TRIL Centre, Joanna is currently working on projects investigating the contributions of various psychological and cognitive factors to the nature of sleep quality and sleep disorders.  She is also involved in a separate project examining the use of communicative technology as a preventative measure of social isolation in at risk populations, for example, caregivers of older adults with dementia.
